Olivia EP

Maribou State

Release date: 06/02/2012 Digital release date: 06/02/2012 Label: Fat! Records

Maribou State are back! Following on from their last release on Fat! Records, Got Me Down, along with a couple of top remixes for house giants, Crookers, house oddities The 2 Bears, and the UK's finest MC Wretch 32 the London based duo return with a couple of brand new, bass orientated, tunes, solidifying their freshly earned place at the top of a rapidly growing pile of forward thinking producers.

Kicking things off, track 1, Olivia” coils up pressure through gentle atmospherics and subtle, distant, bells, building up to a stunning release. The drums tighten up and the reverberating metallic hits find a more prominent groove in which to sit, until the pace is broken only by the introduction of forlorn vocal cuts. Once again the pressure builds and swirls, toying with the feeling of tension before plummeting straight back into the groove, except this time with much more momentum. In this upbeat finish, sharp synths glide across the track, dissecting the skittering rhythms and vocals to devastating effect.

Track two, “Bricks”, however brings the levels down, an opposite and more reserved response to the muscular track preceding it. This one is brimming with metropolitan sleekness and grace as the pronounced bass hits serve to unleash a stammering groove, allowing the whole piece to slink along with a heightened sense of futurism. Restrained percs help hold the track together; creating an underlying and inescapable anxiety that engulfs the listener in a thoroughly enjoyable manner.

With more music to come courtesy of a release on Southern Fried following this one, you can bet quite safely that this won’t be the last you’ll be hearing from Maribou State this year.
